Vapour Waves: Synths powered by discarded e-cigarettes.

  • Digital Arts Studios 1 Exchange Place Belfast, Northern Ireland, BT1 2NA United Kingdom (map)

This is a free workshop about repurposing e-waste to power unique noise-making synthesisers.

Organised by Barry Cullen, Saul Rayson & Alex Lucas and hosted at the Digital Arts Studios.

This 3-hour beginners SDIWO* in-person workshop connects the themes of art, music, technology and power through a mix of theory and practice.

Participants will use small microcontrollers to produce and manipulate 8-bit audio. The topics of sound creation, modulation and manipulation, and how we power our technologies are covered in practical exercises. Hacking is encouraged. With guidance, participants will decide on the functionality of their synth and select sensors for interaction.

Hardware will be powered using e-waste. The batteries that will drive the circuits are sourced from disposable e-cigarettes. This workshop encourages participants to consider the materials and resources used in art practices in terms of the impact created on the audience and environment.
