This workshop is the first of a series offering 6 community arts facilitators or artists working in the community the opportunity to be part of the project “on-off-states”, mapping points of view of the city. The project brings together the idea of collecting audio and visual material describing cityscapes and the use of simple digital recording devices. Working between computer software programmes and hands on material processes, the workshop provides the knowhow of putting together a multi-media toolkit for map making. The D.I.Y. experience involves introduction to the means of accessing open source software programmes and the experience of working between computer and hands on material process. Participants come away with an extended repertoire of creative processes and material outputs, with ideas for making tote bags, badges and fanzines. Experience in computer design is not required, just a willingness to experiment with map making using a multi-media toolkit to explore the idea of relating to the environment of the city.
