The residency programmes bring artists from a wide range of disciplines to DAS where they can work on digital projects in a dedicated environment. An important part of the programme is the opportunity to showcase work to an audience and informally discuss their practice with both peers and public.

International Resident Artist Talk and Peer Critique Seminar

Vanessa Nica Mueller

Artist Talk

Thursday 26th August

6.30pm

Peer Critique Seminar

Thursday 9th September

10.30 – 4.30

German filmmaker and media lecturer Vanessa Nica Mueller is the DAS International Resident for August and September. Influenced by Chris Marker, Chantal Akermann and Philip-Lorca diCorcia, her work addresses the alienation of the traveller using both documentary and fictional strategies. For her DAS residency Vanessa will create a new piece of work that combines photography, found footage and audio interviews to map Belfast along the personal stories and portraits of young people living here.

Following her talk Vanessa will host a Peer Critique seminar at DAS which will be of particular interest to artists exploring documentary film strategies and contemporary portraiture. Please contact DAS if you would like to book a place in the seminar.

UK/Ireland Resident Presentations

Michael Hanna & Ryan Moffett

Thursday 19th August

6.30 pm

Michael’s work takes a wide range of forms including drawing, sculpture, acoustic installation, text, performance and video. His main areas of interest are order and sequence, written language, physicality of speech, and codes/ciphers.
Ryan creates large-scale multi-media installations that use both traditional and non-traditional film making techniques to explore cinematic perspective. The physical body or surface of his installations provide spaces against which the viewer/participant can further investigate narrative.

Michael and Ryan are creating a collaborative durational installation entitled Inter alia for the DAS Resident Exhibition in PS2 Gallery

Michael MacBroom

Thursday 2nd September

6.30 pm

An ‘accidental guerrilla filmmaker’, Michael believes passionately in the DIY ethos born from Belfast’s underground arts culture. The particular connection between digital feature filmmaking and documentary, as espoused by director Mike Figgis, also stands out as an influence on his improvisational style. For his DAS residency Michael will complete his ‘no budget’ feature length digital film entitled Endless Life.

All DAS talks are free and open to the public.
