Lab Work
In early 2024, DAS established a new XR Research and Development Lab within its studios, designed to provide opportunities for artists to work with XR technologies, experiment, and develop their skills.
With the support of a grant from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland’s National Lottery-funded Organisation Digital Evolution Awards, we acquired state-of-the-art equipment, including two META Quest 3 Mixed Reality Headsets, a GoPro Max Camera Bundle, and a Zoom H3-VR Virtual Reality Audio Recorder. Combined with our existing equipment, we created a comprehensive kit to support artists working in the field of XR.
Project managed by DAS Creative Technician Dr. Richard Davis, the Lab has attracted over 120 artists and hosted 30 core artists who regularly collaborate, sharing experiences, personal practices, concepts, and skills.
The Lab’s weekly informal sessions have fostered experimentation and collaborative learning within the community, building confidence and expanding technical knowledge. Participants have also benefited from a series of workshops led by experts in the field, covering topics such as Unity Engine, Projection Mapping, and Ambisonic & Immersive Audio.
The primary aim of the XR Lab was to facilitate the creation of new work. We are thrilled to present the outcomes of this initiative with Lab Work, an exhibition showcasing works-in-progress from eight of our participants. This collection demonstrates a variety of approaches, concepts, and modes of presentation, utilizing diverse technologies—including VR, AI, and AR.
An accompanying documentary video features participants reflecting on their experiences in the Lab. They share insights into their creative processes, the challenges and potential of working with cutting-edge technologies, and the transformative impact of the project on their practices. The video also highlights how this initiative has enabled artists to envision new horizons by expanding their technical, conceptual, and philosophical boundaries.
The Lab Work exhibition runs from Friday, 17th January, to Friday, 7th February, and is open 12–4 PM, Tuesday to Friday.
All information about the exhibition events can be found on our What’s On page.
We look forward to welcoming you to experience this exciting showcase of innovation and creativity.
